How do babies grow and develop in the first year?
The 12-month mark will likely reflect some big changes for your child. you’ll likely begin to see a unique personality begin to emerge. At this age, your child may begin to use words, be able to stand on her/his own and take a few steps. Your 1-year-old will begin to try and become independent in many ways. In just one year, your baby has transformed from a completely helpless new-born into an independent little person.
Weight: – 9kg
Height: – 75cms
Head Circumference: – 45cms
Chest Circumference: – Equal to the head circumference at 1year
Gross Motor Development
Sitting – Gets into a sitting position without support.
Walking –
- Walk with support, Steps of unequal direction and length.
- Take a few steps without support.
Fine Motor Development
Hand to Mouth Coordination- Baby tries to feed himself with a spoon but, he often rotates the spoon and spills the contents.
Hand Skills- Dressing – Attempt to dress/undress without success. The child starts to pull off mittens, caps, and socks.
Some of her favourite games might include:
- Building towers of up to four blocks, then knocking them down
- Covering and uncovering boxes or other containers
- Picking up balls or other objects in motion
- Turning knobs and pages
- Putting round pegs into holes
- Scribbling and painting
These activities will help her develop hand skills.
Social Development
For the most part, 1-year-olds prefer to play next to other kids, as opposed to with them. But you may see your child begin to include other kids in play at times.
Mimicry- Child can repeat any performance that evokes appreciative Laughter and mimics the actions carried out by mother at home.
Language Development
Speech – Can use 2 words with meaning for objects of daily use. coos and screams of the early baby talk will give way to distinct babbling sounds like “da,” “ba,” “ga,” and “ma.”
General understanding
Starts understanding small phrases.
He can understand simple questions like “where is your papa?”
Developmental Health Watch
Alert your paediatrician if your baby displays any of the following signs of possible developmental delay in the eight-to twelve-month age range.
- Does not crawl
- Drags one side of body while crawling (for over one month)
- Cannot stand when supported
- Does not search for objects that are hidden while he watches
- Says no single words (“mama” or “dada”)
- Does not learn to use gestures, such as waving or shaking head
- Does not point to objects or pictures
