How and when do you start baby weaning & What food should you give them ?

Mother milk cannot provide all energy and protein required for maintaining an adequate velocity of growth for infants after the age of 4-6 month. Hence it is necessary to introduce more concentrated nutritional supplements by this age.

Time of Weaning : 6-9 month of Age

Why Start at 6 month?

1. Intestinal tracts develops immunologically with defence mechanism to protect the infant from foreign proteins.

2. Neuromuscular mechanism needed for recognising & accepting a spoon, masticating, swallowing non-liquid foods appreciating variation in the taste and colour of food.

Weaning food for a day

For 6 – 9 months old baby:

  • ½ cup Kichadi 
  • 2 ½ tbsp mashed fruits

For 10 – 12 months old baby:

  • ¾ cup kichadi
  • 1 piece of biscuits
  • 4 tbsp fruit cut into finger sized pieces

For Above 12 months old baby:

  • 3 meals & 2 snacks a day
